Truck sales in the first three months hit a record high this year.

According to the T-Markii truck sales database, Australia’s heavy vehicle market has delivered more than 10,000 sales from January 1 to March 31.

Analysis by the Truck Industry Council (TIC), who compile the truck sales database, found 10,458 trucks and heavy vans were sold in the first quarter of the calendar year, up 1,641 trucks or 18.6% on the previous record sales levels set for the same time in 2022.

The figures for March itself reveal another record with 4,174 heavy vehicles sold, 9.9% up on the previous record of 3,797 set in 2022.

TIC CEO Tony McMullan says the figures show ongoing strength in the market.

The TIC report states that the Heavy and Light Duty truck sectors along with the Van sector have all shown strong growth in the first three months of this year, up 20% 17.4% and 41.5% respectively.

With respect to van sales, the percentage rise looks massive, however in 2022 van sales were the worst seen in almost a decade, so the base was set very low last year.

Over the same first quarter period, Medium Duty truck sales are up by a more modest 5.5 percent.

Light Duty truck sales (those trucks with a GVM between 3,500 kg and 8,000 kg) recorded 1,510 units, up 5.7% (82 trucks) over March 2022.  The segment set a new first quarter sales record of 3,779 Light truck deliveries.

The Truck Industry Council represents all suppliers of on-road heavy vehicles in Australia including the 17 truck brands currently on sale in Australia, plus four truck engine and major component brands.
